NEVI 101: Alternative Fuel Corridors

As part of the requirements established by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program can only fund projects located less than one (1) mile from a designated Alternative Fuel Corridor (AFC).

What is an AFC?

To create a national network of EV charging stations, the FHWA established US Interstates as Alternative Fuel Corridors. However, states could apply for exemptions to include certain state and US highways within their borders to be designated as an AFC as well.

AFCs in Idaho

Due to Idaho not having any Interstates that run north-south, the State applied for exemptions to include several US and state highways. This ensures a more interconnected system and deploys the NEVI Program in a way that benefits all Idahoans. The full list of AFCs in Idaho includes:

  • US-1

  • I-90

  • US-95

  • US-12

  • SH-55

  • I-84

  • I-86

  • I-15

  • US-93

  • US-30
