NEVI 101: RENEWABLE ENERGY
The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program is designed to build a national network of EV charging stations, connecting states, and bringing economic opportunities and new transportation options to communities. This infrastructure will ensure Idaho can keep pace with projected market demands, while allowing Idaho businesses to diversify by utilizing these federal investments through the NEVI Program.
A factor that future site hosts will need to consider is how to ensure longevity and reliability of these charging stations. One possible way to do that is to incorporate renewable energy resources and energy storage solutions in their plans for EV charging stations as they reduce demand on electric grids and reduce operational costs for site hosts. These resources could include:
Solar panels
Rechargeable batteries
On-site energy storage
Are site hosts required to use renewable energy?
It is not a requirement for these charging stations to use renewable energy, but proposals that offer such options will be taken under consideration when weighting potential projects during the RFP process administered by the state.
Are renewable energy systems eligible for NEVI funding?
The purchase and installation of renewable energy and energy storage systems that connect to the electrical grid could qualify for reimbursement grants through the NEVI Program. General maintenance and repairs on any systems however would not be eligible for reimbursement.
