NEVI 101: FUNDING

The 2021 Bipartisan Law - also called the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (IIJA) - established the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. It invests federal dollars into states to build out a national network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and is designed to foster public-private partnerships with privately-owned companies and organizations.

Potential site hosts whose business is less than one mile from an Alternative Fuel Corridor can apply for reimbursement grants through the NEVI Program. These grants can cover up to 80% of costs over a five year period for the host and can include construction / infrastructure costs, operations, and general maintenance. The operational costs that do not qualify for these grants include electricity costs, taxes, and costs related to adjacent amenities (i.e. operations or maintenance for a restaurant or convenience store).

Since the program is designed to foster private-public partnerships, EV charging stations using NEVI funds will not be built on publicly-owned or managed properties - these include rest stops, state parks, and public buildings. As a result, no state tax dollars will be used to build or maintain these charging stations.

If you are interested in learning more about potentially becoming a site host, contact the project team for more information.
